The project

About

A free, comparative and rigorous pedagogical resource for the study of the three great Christian traditions.

ℹ

The project in brief

Theologia Reformata is a pedagogical platform for the comparative study of the Christian traditions — Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant — freely accessible and intended for students, pastors, priests, catechumens and anyone curious to understand the theological richness of Christianity in its historical plurality.

The site offers 28 study modules arranged in six thematic families: Church history, systematic theology, comparative theology, confessional branches, contemporary contextual theologies, and biblical exegesis of the New Testament. Each module contains a detailed course, 40 interactive revision cards, three self-assessment quizzes and a reference bibliography.

Our method: confessional neutrality

The guiding principle of the site is the even-handed presentation of the three great Christian confessional families. We defend no particular confessional position. We set out rigorously the arguments, the founding texts, the historical developments and the doctrinal positions of each tradition.

The visitor may be Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant (Reformed, Lutheran, Anglican, Methodist, Baptist, Pentecostal…) or simply curious — in Theologia Reformata they will find an honest presentation of their own tradition and of the others.

Contested questions (justification by faith, the authority of the magisterium, the sacraments, mariology, ecclesiology, eschatology) are set out by placing the positions side by side, citing the primary sources and drawing on the advances of contemporary ecumenical dialogue (the WCC, the Groupe des Dombes, the 1999 Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification, the TOB).

Learning with enjoyment

Theology is demanding — but it can be joyful. Theologia Reformata practises an active pedagogy resting on:

  • Interactive flashcards revealed at a click, with progress tracking and filtering by category
  • Multiple-choice quizzes with detailed feedback, badges and a system of academic levels (Curious, Bachelor, Magister, Doctor honoris causa, Magnus Doctor)
  • A companion character: Professor Tryphon Goldberg, a fictional and warm-hearted honorary professor who converses with you
  • A concrete approach: quotations in Greek, Hebrew and Latin with transliteration and translation, precise textual examples, and verifiable bibliographical references

The author

The site is self-published by KMN, its sole author and the person responsible for publication.

To preserve the editorial neutrality of the project, the author has chosen not to state his confessional allegiance publicly. This reticence is not secrecy but an editorial discipline: the reader’s comparative reading should not be influenced by knowing the author’s confession.

The author is devoted to the history of Christianity, the biblical languages, comparative systematic theology and the liturgical traditions. He has built this resource over several years of voluntary work.

Academic standards

The content observes the standards of contemporary academic theological research:

  • SBL references (Society of Biblical Literature) for the biblical abbreviations
  • Systematic citation of the primary sources (the Scriptures, councils, confessions of faith, the Fathers of the Church)
  • An up-to-date secondary bibliography drawn from international scholarship (Anglophone, German, French-language and Italian authors)
  • A clear distinction between historical facts, confessional positions and contemporary academic debates
  • Multilingual: modules partly available in German, English, Italian and Romansh

What Theologia Reformata is not

To set expectations clearly:

  • It is not an institutional site — Theologia Reformata is attached to no Church, no university and no allegiance
  • It is not a pastoral site — for personal spiritual guidance, consult a minister of your own tradition
  • It is not a polemical or apologetic site — it seeks not to convert but to inform
  • It is not an exhaustive site — it offers a rigorous introduction to complex questions, not a monumental treatise
  • It is not a commercial site — no advertising, no products, no monetisation

Contributions and feedback

Your feedback is valuable. If you spot an error, an inaccuracy or a lack of balance in the presentation of a confessional position, or if you have a pedagogical suggestion, write to contact@theologia-reformata.ch or use the contact form.

Every reasoned correction will be examined and, if well founded, incorporated with thanks (anonymously or by name, as you prefer).

Remerciements

Theologia Reformata owes much to the contemporary scholarly resources on which it draws: the CNT commentaries (Labor et Fides), the Word Biblical Commentary series, the output of the World Council of Churches and the Groupe des Dombes, and the work of the theological faculties of Geneva, Lausanne, Strasbourg, Paris, Tübingen, Cambridge and Notre Dame, among many others. Without this living tradition of scholarship, the present site could not have existed.
