Seven New Testament epistles (James, 1-2 Peter, 1-2-3 John, Jude) addressed not to a specific local community but to the universal Church or a general recipient.

General Introduction

The expression « catholic » epistles (katholikai epistolai) — etymologically « universal » — appears in Eusebius of Caesarea (Hist. eccl. II.23.25). The term « catholic » here means « addressed to the whole Church », not denominationally.

Composition of the corpus

The corpus includes : James (ca. 45–62 high or 80–100 low), 1 Peter (ca. 60–65), 2 Peter (ca. 100–125, pseudepigraphical), 1 John (ca. 90–110), 2 and 3 John (ca. 90–110), Jude (ca. 65–90).
